Dodge Ram 2002 to 2007: The "DR" Trucks
The third-generation Ram debuted for 2002. This represented a major update including all new frame, suspension, power equipment, interiors, and sheet metal. Includes a larger grille, and remained the focus of the models as most competitors had adopted the Ram's separate-fender view. Cummins isb diesel was in the Ward's 10 Best Engines list for 2004. The four wheel drive light trucks (1500 series) lost their live axles in trade for an independent front suspension, but the heavy work (2500 and 3500 series) kept alive axles for maximum durability and load capacity.
The new design of DR trucks reignited sales, with 400,000 sold in 2002 and sold about 450,000 in 2003, a new peak of the Ram name. At the same time, both Ford and GM trucks are declining from a 2001 peak of more than 900,000 to 850,000 in the area. However, sales of the Ram, was unable to keep pace with the eleventh-generation F-150 and Nissan Titan stronger in 2004 and 2005, with 400,543 Rams sold that year. The Toyota Tundra had never posed much of a threat, but a much bigger 2007 model may further undermine sales of Dodge.
